Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology Director of Advanced Networking and Cyber-Security is a member of the OIT leadership team, and a direct report of the Associate Vice President/Chief Technology Officer (AVP/CTO). This position is responsible for the strategic direction and operation of the university’s administrative, academic and research networks and enterprise network services. These services include, but are not limited to:
• Border connectivity providing redundant commodity internet access
• Advanced research network providing connectivity to Internet2 and other research networks
• Data center network at three sites
• Campus wired network (20,000+ ports)
• Campus wireless network (1100+ access points, 13,000+ client devices)
• Residential wireless network (2300+ access points, 10,000+ devices)
DNS, DHCP, and Load balancing
• Campus IoT network
• Campus Voice/Telephony service
• Network security systems including firewalls, intrusion detection, and intrusion prevention systems
• Data/Voice connectivity for five remote sites
• Capacity planning and availability reporting for all network services and functions
• Disaster recovery and business continuity planning and testing
• Incident management and root cause analysis

In addition, and equally important, this role will help nurture an environment of positivity, openness, collaboration, and trust between campus (academic, student, administrative, and staff), OIT staff, our service providers and partners, and the CIO. The ideal candidate will ensure network services are available and secure while driving the change required to innovate and meet the needs of a Tier 1 research university.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree 10 years of progressive experience operating and 7 years of experience leading network teams in complex environments

Preferred Education and Experience

• Broad experience running multi-vendor networks and network services
• Higher education experience
• Master’s degree, preferably Management, IT, or Computer Science
• Experience with Amazon AWS and/or Microsoft Azure network services
• Experience working with research networks at the national level

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in creating budgets for network teams
• Ensure network resources/services are delivered cost-effectively and efficiently
• Establish and maintain service level agreements for OIT network services
• Direct the design and planning for enterprise network and telecom services
• Oversees specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture
• Create a sustainable model for lifecycle management of all network hardware
• Measure and report on network capacity, health, and performance
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, coaching, career development and feedback for performance management to a highly technical team
• Ensure service outages are communicated and resolved quickly with minimal disruption
• Timely and effectively communicate progress to stakeholders, CTO, colleagues, staff, and service partners as appropriate
• Direct leading edge practices, tools, and technology heavily leveraging automation
• Establish best practices and policies for network system design and implementation
• Manage vendor relationships to ensure optimal service levels, support, and pricing
• Execute and improve the core network security functions including: segmentation, threat detection and prevention, incident response, network security monitoring, forensics, and vulnerability management
• Oversee recruiting, hiring, evaluations and disciplinary actions. Ensure staff adhere to established standards for completion of their work
• Utilize project management principles to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
