Job Summary

The Lonestar Education And Research Network (LEARN) is a consortium of 39 organizations throughout Texas that includes public and private institutions of higher education, community colleges, the National Weather Service, and K-12 public schools. The consortium, organized as a 501©3, connects these organizations, and over 630+ affiliated organizations, together with high performance optical network services to support their research, education, healthcare and public service missions. LEARN provides Layer 1 and MPLS transport services. It also provides IP connectivity to a global research network through Internet2 and other networks, and commercial Internet services (CIS) to its members.
Position Location: This position requires the candidate to currently operate from a home office in a virtual office environment.
Travel Requirements: Travel to LEARN POPs and member locations throughout the Central, North and Southeast regions of Texas regularly and throughout the state of Texas occasionally.

Required Experience includes:

- Experience with VMware 5.x and 6.x
- Linux (Centos 6 and above, Ubuntu 10 and above)and BSD system administration skills
- Windows Server (Server 2008 and above) system administration skills
- Understanding of the 7 layers of the Open Systems Interconnection model
- SQL (MySQL and Postgres) Database design and management skills
- Proficient with computer coding/scripting (e.g. Java, PHP, Perl, Python, C++, bash)

Minimum Education and Experience

- Some college/Associates degree in Computer Software, Information Systems or related fields.
- 3-5 years of experience in software support and development with proficiency in scripting and programming.

Preferred Education and Experience

Preferred Education and Experience - Knowledge of Layer2/3 protocols and technologies, e.g. 802.1q, BGP, MPLS
- Python, Java, Linux or DevOps certifications
- Prior experience working with R&E networks
- IPv4/v6 address management, DNS, and DHCP
- Project development and network documentation experience
- Team building abilities
- Proven communication skills in business environment

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Provisioning, deploying, administering, monitoring, maintaining, troubleshooting, upgrading, and patching of LEARN network management and support servers.
- Code development and review, version control tools, code merging.
- Continuous integration tools, build status.
- Continuous testing tools that provide feedback on business risks.
- Artifact repository, application pre-deployment staging.
- Change management, release approvals, release automation.
- Virtual Machine infrastructure configuration and management.
- Application performance monitoring, end–user experience.
- Isolate and diagnose root causes of software or hardware issues and act on a plan of action for timely problem resolution.
- Design and implement configuration of servers, virtual machines, applications, and databases.
- Design and implement advanced configuration of network management tools and systems.
- Interact and collaborate with vendors and contractors for product/platform evaluation, technical implementation and planning, and procuring network systems and IT services.
- Develop, implement, and maintain standard operational procedures and established standards.

The individual will work in a small team environment, but will have significant interaction with network and service providers, and members ranging from K-20, higher education, University system networks, other regional and national networks, content providers, and application providers.
